DS11 Frequently asked Questions

APPLICATIONS

1. DOES THE DS11 REPLACE A WALL SAW OR CONCRETE CIRCULAR SAW?

No. The DS11 was designed to enhance the productivity and profitability of a wall or circular saw by eliminating costly overcuts, providing portability, and permitting plunge cutting to depths of 18 in / 45 cm.

2. WHAT MATERIALS WON'T THE DS11 CUT?

Wood, plastics and sheet metal.

3. CAN I MAKE AN UPWARD CUT OR PULL THE DS11 IN AN UPWARD DIRECTION?

Yes, the DS11 can cut in any position and in any direction.

ABOUT THE DIAMOND CHAIN AND BAR

4. DOES PLUNGE CUTTING AFFECT THE LIFE OF THE CHAIN AND BAR?

Yes. The greatest load to an individual segment is induced during plunge cutting. When slab cutting four or five segments are equally distributing the work.

5. WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT SEGMENT CHAIN TYPES?

Based on testing and experience, different chains were required to cover the softest (green) concrete to the hardest reinforced concrete. A chain capable of cutting reinforced, hard concrete will not cut or wear properly if used on green concrete. Conversely, a chain capable of cutting green concrete will not cut or wear properly if used on hard concrete. It is extremely important to use the right chain for any given application.

6. CAN I REBUILD A BROKEN CHAIN OR DIAMOND SEGMENT?

Yes. Repair kits are available to replace a broken segment or link.

7. HOW ARE CUTS MEASURED?

Cutting is measured by a inch foot which is a one inch deep cut by 12 inches long. As an example; a 24 inch long cut in 7 inch thick concrete is measured by multiplying the length of the cut (24") by the depth of the cut (7") and then dividing by 12. In this example the sum total of material cut is 14 inch feet.

8. DO THE CHAIN AND BAR REQUIRE LUBRICATION?

Yes. The chain and bar require pressure water lubrication for cooling and cleaning. The only other lubrication recommended is spraying the bar and chain with WD-40 at the end of the work day.

9. HOW MUCH WATER LUBRICATION IS REQUIRED?

3-5 gallons per minute (11-19 lpm) with a water pressure of at least 80 psi (4.3 bar) at the saw for normal usage. If doing successive plunge cuts or if the nose of the bar remains in the material, increase the water pressure to 100 psi (7 bar) at the saw.

10. CAN I RUN THE DS11 WITHOUT WATER FOR A SHORT TIME?

NO! NO EXCEPTIONS! Not only will the diamond chain not cut properly, the chain will be destroyed.

ABOUT THE SAW AND MAINTENANCE

11. CAN I OPERATE THE DS11 UNDERWATER?

Only the underwater version of the DS11 can be run underwater. The land model can not be operated underwater. Even when operating underwater, the water flow and pressure must be provided as explained above.

12. WHAT SPECIAL MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED?

Adjustment of the chain tension. Periodic dressing (filing) on the bar grooves to remove burrs. Periodic rotation of the bar from top to bottom. Thorough flushing of the bar and chain at the end of the work shift. No other routine maintenance is required.

ABOUT THE HYDRAULIC POWER SOURCE

13. CAN I OPERATE A DS11 OFF ANY HYDRAULIC POWER SOURCE?

In general, yes, but please keep in mind that, in order to prevent costly premature chain wear, proper hydraulic oil flow, oil pressure, water flow and water pressure must be maintained. Steffen is well equipped to advise you about the required hydraulics.
